DOCUMENTARY SPOTLIGHT: TransMilitary

The 2018 SXSW Audience Award-winning feature film debut by Gabriel Silverman & Fiona Dawson, TransMilitary follows the Emmy-nominated short film Transgender, at War and in Love. Around 15,500 transgender people serve in the U.S. military (notably the largest transgender employer in the U.S.), where they must conceal their gender identity because military policies ban their service. TransMilitary chronicles the lives of four individuals (Senior Airman Logan Ireland, Corporal Laila Villanueva, Captain Jennifer Peace & First Lieutenant El Cook) defending their country’s freedom while fighting for their own. They put their careers and their families’ livelihoods on the line by coming out as transgender to top brass officials in the Pentagon in hopes of attaining the equal right to serve. The ban was lifted in 2016, but with President Trump now trying to reinstate it, their futures hang in the balance again.

3rd Friday Argenta Art Walk: Fashion and the Moving Image + 1681 Fashion Exhibit

Fashion and the Moving Image

As the Kaleidoscope Film Festival expands to include the work  of artists in multiple disciplines, we turn our eye to the world of fashion.  Here, we explore the ongoing dialogue between  fashion and film, considering the ways in which motion picture aesthetics inspire designers, as well as the ways in which clothing trends influence film costumers….

1681

Born from two artists half a country away, sharing ideas via social media, 1681 combines illustration along with the construction and design of garments. They began working together to create what they would like to see in the world, a world that could be comfortable and fashionable.  The same time taking it back to the human hand, each piece hand made and using elements of hand drawn images.

Danforth, The Miseducation of Cameron Post follows Cameron (Chloë Grace Moretz) as she is sent to a gay conversion therapy center after getting caught with another girl in the back seat of a car on prom night. Run by the strict and severe Dr. Lydia Marsh (Jennifer Ehle) and her brother, Reverend Rick (John Gallagher Jr.)—himself an example of how those in the program can be “cured”—the center is built upon repenting for “same sex attraction.” In the face of intolerance and denial, Cameron meets a group of fellow sinners including the amputee stoner Jane (Sasha Lane), and her friend, the Lakota Two-Spirit, Adam (Forrest Goodluck). Skate Kitchen + Alex in the Morning (Preview)

Ticket includes admission to:
7:00 PM - Alex in the Morning
7:30 PM - Skate Kitchen

In the first narrative feature from The Wolfpack director Crystal Moselle, Camille, an introverted teenage skateboarder (newcomer Rachelle Vinberg) from Long Island, meets and befriends an all-girl, New York City-based skateboarding crew called Skate Kitchen. She falls in with the in-crowd, has a falling-out with her mother, and falls for a mysterious skateboarder guy (Jaden Smith), but a relationship with him proves to be trickier to navigate than a kickflip. Writer/director Crystal Moselle immersed herself in the lives of the skater girls and worked closely with them, resulting in the film's authenticity, which combines poetic, atmospheric filmmaking and hypnotic skating sequences. SKATE KITCHEN precisely captures the experience of women in male-dominated spaces and tells a story of a girl who learns the importance of camaraderie and self-discovery.

DOCUMENTARY SPOTLIGHT: Obscuro Barroco

Obscuro Barroco is a documentary-fiction about the dizzying heights of gender and metamorphosis. It is also a cinematographic hommage to a land of extremes; the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Following the path of iconic transgender figure Luana Muniz (1961-2017), the film explores different quests for the self through transvestism, carnaval and political struggle. In turn, it asks questions about the desire for transformation of the body, both intimate and social.

Shakedown

We’re outside the club, on a non-descript Los Angeles street at night. The bass of the music inside slowly spills out as the guard checks I.D.s and credentials. Inside, the girls are getting ready, cracking jokes. The scene in the club is very intimate and sensual. The camera tightly pans across to Ronnie Ron doing what she does best; making the audience feel at ease. She’s warming them up and us, the viewers. "Can y’all show some love? Y’all still tipping? If you are.. lemme know!” We then jump to a scene of Egypt in the center of the dance floor. She’s fine, she’s frightening, she is in charge. Patrons shower her in dollars. They love her.

This is SHAKEDOWN, a story that unfolds like a legend.
